If you’ve been into K-beauty for a long time, chances are you’ve heard of the iconic TONYMOLY Back Gel Eyeliner. It’s been around for a while and has earned quite the reputation as a best-seller with numerous awards under its belt. I’ve been using the same eyeliner for years and didn’t really explore other options until last year. But, since I’m looking for good brown eyeliners recently, this one had to be on my list to try out.

Where to buy: You can find this at Yesstyle (use reward code: KBEAUTYNOTES for % off your order), Stylevana (10% OFF entire order with the code INF10LED), Beauty Box Korea.

Price: $10 – $22

Volume: 4g

Packaging: The packaging is undeniably striking and sets it apart from other products in the same category. In addition to the gel, it also includes a brush, but I have to be honest – I do not like it one bit. Too poky and it’s difficult to create those thin lines. I swapped it out for my own eyeliner brush for better control and precision.

As much as I love its aesthetic, I have to admit it’s not the most practical packaging. Sure, it looks gorgeous on the vanity and it’s easier to find it my makeup pouch, but a more compact packaging for convenience on the go would’ve been nice too.

TONYMOLY Back Gel Eyeliner

According to the brand, the TONYMOLY Back Gel Eyeliner promises to deliver the precision typically associated with a liquid liner, all while offering the effortless application of a gel-based formula. Thanks to its user-friendly brush applicator, the eyeliner is said to effortlessly glide on with smooth, precise lines. (Despite the brand’s claim about the user-friendly brush applicator, I personally found it to be quite useless.) Plus, it boasts a quick drying time, ensuring a long-wearing, water-resistant finish for a look that lasts.

It comes in 3 shades: 01 Black, 02 Brown, and 03 Pearl Brown. I picked mine in 02 Brown.

Performance

I absolutely love the creamy and smooth texture of this gel eyeliner. It glides on effortlessly when I apply it with a separate eyeliner brush. While I can achieve thin and precise lines, they may not be as razor-thin as those achieved with liquid eyeliners equipped with ultra-thin brushes.

Let’s talk about the shade – it’s a rich brown with intense pigmentation, delivering a stunning matte finish. And the best part? No feathering!

One thing to note is that this eyeliner sets very quickly, so you’ll need to work fast. However, if you need to go over it with a fresh application, the formula allows for seamless layering without lifting the previous stroke.

To ensure long-lasting wear, priming the lids is a must to keep it locked in place. The more matte your lids, the longer it’ll hold up. However, if you have oily lids like mine, expect some smudging by the end of the day. And of course, it will start to smudge (but not flake) if you rub your eyes. As for its water-resistant claim, it’s likely to hold up well as long as you avoid touching the area.

Final Verdict on the TONYMOLY Back Gel Eyeliner

Overall, I’m quite pleased with the eyeliner. I’m glad I went for the brown shade—it’s just more suitable for everyday wear. It offers a more natural look compared to black and pairs beautifully with smokey eye makeup as well, given that brown shades blend more seamlessly. Definitely a win in my book!
